Arts and Opera Down Under

Arts and opera down under Next month sees the start of the Perth International Arts Festival, bringing a wide range of events and performances for people to go to.

The centrepiece of the event is to be the world premiere of a new chamber opera entitled The Love of the Nightingale.

Based on a Greek myth about two sisters, the production is a collaborative event featuring the talents of six arts organisations and with music by composer Richard Mills.

The opera will be performed alongside Orpheus in the Underworld, which is similarly classical in tone though given a "contemporary Australian context" for this performance.

Festival-goers in need of a musical break from opera will be well-served by The Tallis Scholars and the Gotan Project, who will bring their unique blend of electronics and tango to Perth.

Other highlights include an exhibition of work from photojournalists documenting the plight of the Congolese and a performance from Wild Cursive – a Taiwanese dance troupe influenced by Chinese culture.

Visitors to the festival might wish to take in the various other attractions to see in Perth such as the Swan River or one of its many vineyards.
