Australia Day

Australia Day As the only country in the world to start off as a prison, Australia has come a long way, so much so that its humble beginnings are seen as something to be proud of, as Australia Day, January 26th proves.

The date marks the 1788 landing at Botany Bay of Captain Cook, when the continent was claimed for the crown.

Botany Bay is now part of Sydney, making the city an obvious place to spend the day, with the public holiday being marked with a number of parades, festivities and shows.

These include an air force fly-past, an Aboriginal Woggan Ma Gule (Morning ceremony) and a mastercook BBQ in the city centre, while the harbour hosts the ferrython, a race between different catamarans to be the first under the harbour bridge and a tall ships race.

If that wasn't enough fun, it all ends with a fireworks and laser spectacle in Darling Harbour.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Sydney will find plenty more to do as well.

Apart from trips to the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, Australia's biggest city offers famous beaches and surf, lively nightlife and hot sunshine.

Clearly, Captain Cook was onto a good thing.
