Film buffs may find that late July and early August are a great time to visit Melbourne, which hosts its own festival during this time.
The Melbourne International Film Festival runs from July 25th to August 12th, said by organisers to be the largest film festival in Australia and growing rapidly, with a 230 per cent increase in attendances since 1996.
Showing films from all over the world, for three weeks the festival turns central Melbourne into even more of a melting pot of culture and creativity than it already is.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels will be able to experience this first-hand through the vibrant cosmopolitan European atmosphere of the city and the wide variety of cuisine, while the trams that wind their way between the towering skyscrapers provide a contrast between old and new.
The festival has awards in a variety of categories and a number of enjoyable fringe events.
