Get the Hump
Those who like to see something a bit different from the norm can kick horse racing into touch and enjoy camel racing in the Australian outback.
Introduced into the Antipodean land by the British, the creatures have found themselves at home in the wide brown land of the Northern Territory, with the town of Alice Springs taking matters one step further and adopted the middle-eastern tradition of camel racing.
Held on Saturday July 14th, the Imparja Camel Cup takes place in Blatherskate Park from 11:30 to 16:40 local time, where no less than nine races take place on a knock-out basis.
According to the programme, the events of the day also include food, drink and bands, while a major highlight is the judging of the prettiest camel.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Alice Springs can also enjoy true outback life in this isolated location.
This includes tasting the indigenous culture of the Aborigines who have lived in the area for thousands of years, including day trips to Uluru (formerly known as Ayer's Rock).
