Multi Canberral
Australia is increasingly proud to promote its multiculturalism these days, a legacy of post-war immigration that has subtly altered and enriched a country once overwhelmingly anglo-celtic, with February seeing the chief celebration of Australia's ethnic diversity.
Running from February 5th to the 18th, the National Multicultural festival takes place in the capital, Canberra, with street entertainment, food, music and theatre in the heart of the city.
From the Pacific Islander Showcase to Aboriginal bands, the indigenous cultures are represented, while more music is provided by Turkish and African bands.
There are also European fire-eaters and food from Greece.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Canberra will have plenty more to see and do apart from the festival.
Several national Australian institutions, such as the National Museum, Portrait Gallery and War Memorial, are in the capital, while the city itself is an attractively lush location, interspersing suburbia with lush greenery and lakes.
Outstanding views of the city can be enjoyed from the Telstra Tower on Black Mountain.
