Perth in Show of Pride

Perth, the capital of Western Australia, is set to host its annual gay pride event this October.

The event, which takes place in Australian spring will run between September 28th and October 28th, celebrating all things queer.

Featuring parties, theatre, music and visual arts, the festival also has a more serious side, with discussions and public forums on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.

Gay pride in Perth has come a long way since the Western Australia Pride festival started in 1990, when 200 people took part in the rally.

The first march took place, possibly causing the catalyst for legal advancements made in 1990, the year in which the Decriminalisation Bill was passed, making it legal for consenting men over the age of 21 to have intimate relations which had previously been a criminal act.

Although less visited than some of Australia's more high-profile destinations such as Sydney and Cairns, Perth has a great deal to offer tourists.

The city itself is modern and efficient, with cheap hotels and cuisine, while the nearby countryside is renowned for its beauty and wildlife and Western Australia is home to some of the most beautiful beaches and best surf in the world.
