Spring into Action

Spring into action As September arrives, the leaves on the trees start to turn gold and the mornings become colder, it may seem a strange time to be thinking about spring…unless one heads for Australia.

Down under, the country is coming into full bloom, literally so in the case of the capital city, Canberra, where the annual Floriade takes place from the 15th of September to the 14th of October.

The event sees the banks of Lake Burley Griffin in Commonwealth Park transformed by over a million blooms, a vast carpet of colour providing a spectacular display for visitors staying in cheap hotels.

Festival organisers have drawn up an Aussie Icons theme for 2007, including a surf, sun and sand beach theme with sand sculptures, a sports mad display with a sculpture of the Melbourne Cricket Ground and The Backyard, which features a toilet nobody would want to sit on due to the deadly redback spider lurking on the seat.

Canberra also offers visitors plenty of chances to view Australian culture at venues such as the National Portrait Gallery, National Museum of Australia and, for those who just can't get enough of floral splendour, the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
