Sydney Explores the Evolution of Prince Genji
The year 2008 marks the 1,000th anniversary of The Tale of Genji, which is thought to be Japan's oldest novel.
This book, which was written by the court-lady Murasaki Shikibu, features as its main character Hikaru Genji, also known as the Shining Prince.
Over the hundreds of years that have passed since the creation of the novel, Japanese artists have brought the lead character's journey to life by visualising it in hand scrolls, folding screens, hanging scrolls and other works.
From December 12th until February 15th 2009, people staying in cheap hotels in Sydney will be able to visit an exhibition that brings together a wide range of Japanese art that has been inspired by The Tale of Genji.
The showcase at the Art Gallery of New South Wales features about 70 works taken from the gallery's own archive and borrowed from other Australian collections of Japanese art.
Visitors will see a broad range of media in the exhibition, from ukiyo-e prints and woodblock-printed books to paintings and manga comics.
