Sydney-Hobart Race Launches Boxing Day
Sailing fans spending Christmas in Sydney this year can watch the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race launch from the city's harbour on December 26th.
The contest takes place on the waters of Sydney Harbour, the Tasman Sea, Storm Bay and the Derwent River.
A traditional part of Australia's summer of sport, the race from the city on Australia's mainland to Hobart on Tasmania has now been running for 62 years.
The first contest in 1945 involved only nine competitors and was completed in six days and 14 hours. These days, up to 80 vessels take part in the race, which is usually completed in less than 48 hours.
The land down under is famous for its love of sport and the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race gains as much national attention as the Melbourne Cup horse race, the Davis Cup tennis tournament and any contests where England are the opponents.
People staying in cheap hotels in Sydney can enjoy some excellent views of the launch from various points in the city, including the hills approaching Point Piper or ferries that offer close-up views of the action.
