Thousands Pay Anzac Day Respects in Sydney
Thousands of Australians gathered at Sydney's Martin Place to commemorate Anzac Day.
This year will be the 91st anniversary of the Gallipoli landing in 1915, in which more that 8,000 Australians lost their lives.
Thousands of Australians turned out in the rain and wind to attend services in order to coincide with the pre-dawn hour when the first Anzac troops waded ashore.
In the capital of Canberra, the main dawn service at the National War Memorial attracted a crowd of over 27,000 people.
"We are mindful that as we recall the Anzac landing 91 years ago that this year also marks the 90th anniversary of the battle of the Somme and the 40th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan," chaplain Air Commodore Royce Thompson said in a prayer.
A record crowd of over 30,000 people attended a service in the western city of Perth, where people surrounded the war memorial.
In Brisbane, a group of ex-servicemen marched through the city and finally arrived at the Shrine of remembrance in Anzac Square.
