Up for the Cup Down Under

Up for the cup down under Melbourne is widely regarded as Australia's sporting capital, with 2006 proving an especially big year, with the Commonwealth Games, 90,000 people due at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the Ashes Test match on Boxing Day as well as the aussie rules grand final, yet none of these is bigger than Australia's number one sporting event, the Melbourne Cup.

So big is the event that the race day, which this year falls on November 7th, is a public holiday, when all of Australia is said to stop to watch the race unfold.

The meeting is held over three days, with the total prize money for the races standing at the tidy sum of AU$5.1 million (£2 million).

While Melbourne may be the place to be for racing fanatics, the city also offers an outstanding climate, a cosmopolitan atmosphere, a vast range of culinary options, many fine beaches and of course the chance to visit the film set of Neighbours.

It has plenty of accomodation options, including lots of cheap hotels.

Beyond the city the coastal drive to Adelaide along the Great Ocean Road is said to be one of the best in the world, the highlight being the Twelve Apostles, standing pillars of rock in the sea off the Port Campbell National Park coast.
