We're on the Road Through Nowhere

We're on the road through nowhere Visitors to Australia who fancy getting a feel for the vastness of the outback can certainly Western Australia in late August and early September, when the Australian Safari takes place.

Regarded as the Australian equivalent of the Paris to Dakar Rally, the event starts in the small township of Kununurra in the far north of Western Australia, close to the border with the Northern Territory and far closer to Darwin than the eventual destination of Perth.

Spectators in the outback will be able to see four-wheelers battling it out in this race through the vast red, dusty wilderness of a state that covers a third of the continent but is home to under two million people.

However, those keen to see the climax of the race in Perth, a beautiful, laid-back and modern city of 1.3 million people on the Indian Ocean, can do so while enjoying the best of Australian urban life.

As well as plenty of cheap hotels, Perth has excellent beaches, fine seafood and good nightlife, particularly in the Northbridge district just outside the city centre.
