Winter Culture Down Under
Travellers might not want to visit Sydney in winter for its beautiful views of the harbour, impressive bridge, or architecturally unique Opera House.
They might not even want to brave the elements to enjoy the vibrant nightlife, world famous bars such as Cargo and Home, or the famous Bondi, Manley and Coogee beaches.
But for visitors who don't mind staying indoors, the Sydney Film Festival presents screenings at the State Theatre and Dendy Opera Quays, having established itself as Australia's premier film festival.
Taking place until June 25th 2006, the non-profit festival was founded in 1954 and has gone on from strength to strength.
Describing itself as a "sophisticated program of over 200 films, red carpet events, awards nights and masterclasses", the event takes place over 16 days, attracting some 133,000 film-lovers every year.
Celebrating the best in world cinema, the programme includes features, short films, animations, documentaries and retrospectives and many other elements, including the prestigious Dendy awards for Australian short films
Since 1974 the festival has been staged at the State Theatre, a pre-second world war "picture palace" in the heart of the city
The festival also screens at the Dendy Opera Quays cinema complex on Sydney Harbour and at the George Street Cinema complex in downtown south Sydney.
