Advent Adventure
Lots of people have an Advent calendar, with a fresh treat or view marking each day, but Advent in the Austrian district of Kitzbuhel in the Tirol goes somewhat further, with a whole village becoming one giant real-life calendar.
The village in question is Reith, where 24 houses become calendar dates, each one opening a window to reveal a different scene or theme as the countdown to Christmas progresses, while visitors are invited into the house to sample local food and hot mulled wine.
The festivities are accompanied by a Christmas market.
Apart from the delights of Reith, the Kitzbuhel area offers the ski resorts of Kitz and nearby Kirchberg, with plenty of skiing for winter sports enthusiasts.
The wider Tirol region also offers a wealth of winter sports and spectacular alpine scenery.
The area has plenty of accommodation options, including cheap hotels.
