Ancient and modern Those looking to enjoy some contemporary classical music in a historic setting may find just what they are looking for at the Wien Modern, running from October 29th to November 25th.

Featuring 77 concerts in the Austrian capital over the period, the festival, which has been running since 1988, includes a series of special themes, concentrating this year on the works of Gyorgy Kurtag and Bernhard Lang.

Concerts take place at various venues around the city, with many free events and all priced events costing €19 (£12.82).

Apart from the concerts, Vienna has a host of attractions for visitors.

It has a famous musical heritage of Beethoven, Strauss and Mozart, a wide range of gothic architecture, romantic rides on horse drawn carts and the famous Blue Danube.

Among the many parks is the Prater, featuring a huge funfair and a big wheel made famous for a scene in the film The Third Man.

Vienna has plenty of accommodation including cheap hotels.
