Findependence Day
Those who like to see a bit of patriotism from the locals on their travels may find just the thing in Helskini on December 6th, for this is Finland's Independence Day.
Marking the 87th year since independence from Russia, the day sees a wreath laying ceremony at the Hietaniemi Cemetery, followed by a parade by torchlight to the Senate Square at 17.00 local time.
Young and old are involved as the commemoration is led by a mixture of students and military veterans.
Helsinki is an attractive place to be in December, with the large St Thomas's Christmas market at Esplanade Park beginning on the seventh.
Finland's capital has plenty of accommodation, including a number of cheap hotels.
Other visitor attractions in Helskinki include Suomenlinna, one of the largest sea-forts in the world, Uspenski Cathedral, the largest orthodox church in Europe and Korkeasaari zoo, one of the oldest zoos in the world.
