Golf - but Not As We Know It

Golf - a popular sport owing to its comfortable, leisurely nature and the opportunity to take a stroll in the sun, along lush green grass surrounded by flourishing trees.

As nice as all this sounds, nothing could be further from the truth in Austria come January, as the country hosts the Snowgolf Open 2008, the world's most prestigious golf tournament held entirely on snow.

According to the organisers, Snowgolf represents sophistication, aesthetics and excitement, among other things, and will attract players from around the world.

The competition is an event for amateurs, but uses live scoring and a yardage book to create a real tournament atmosphere.

Participants will play in front of TV cameras and alongside celebrities during a weekend of competitive but friendly golf.

Golf enthusiasts staying in cheap hotels in Austria can find the Snowgolf Open in Obertauern between January 24th and 26th 2008.

Obertauern is one of the top ski resorts in Europe, according to the Snowgolf organisers, and appeared in the 1965 film Help!, which starred the Beatles.
