Have an Ice Time in Austria
Anyone fancying something a bit chilled out to do in Austria this autumn should head to the Werfen ice caves near Salzburg, before they close for the winter on October 26th.
Even in summer the temperature in the caves is below freezing, so warm clothes are needed for the spectacular tour, listed by David Attenborough as one of the top ten natural wonders of the world.
Only the first kilometre is open to the public, but that alone requires the visitor to climb 134 metres through this frozen subterranean wonderland of ice walls and glaciers, the largest ice cave in the world.
Led by trained guides, visitors can enjoy such wonders as the 30 metre high and wide Posselt Hall, the Mork Glacier and the Ice Palace.
The cave is close to the city of Salzburg, which is less than 300 Kilometres from Vienna and offers plenty of cheap hotels both in the centre and the suburbs.
