Night of Ballooning in Salzburg
Salzburg is famous for its Sound of Music locations and being the birthplace of Mozart - but a little village just to the south of the city offers even more to visitors staying in hotels in Austria.
Something of a ballooning Mecca since the early 1980s, the tiny village of Filzmoos has become the ultimate location for high-profile ballooning in the world and in January it hosts its annual hot air balloon week.
The challenging winds which blow around the area from the surrounding mountains and the fact that ballooning experts can lift-off from the middle of the village means this has become a popular occasion for the ballooning fraternity for years.
And the event still draws in thousands of ballooners to the Salzburger Sportwelt Amade ski resort, where they can zip down the slopes or retire to the village to take in the sights of the gas giants circling at the festival.
The highlight of the event, the Night of Balloons, sees dozens of the airships fire up into the sky at 6pm, lighting up the January night.
The event runs from January 12th to 19th every year and is free for all.
