One of the World's Most Famous Concerts
Anybody staying in a cheap hotel in Vienna on New Year's Day could be looking forward to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's traditional concert, which has become one of the world's best-known musical events.
Those who have been fortunate enough to get tickets for this event can look forward to a program consisting of lively and nostalgic music reminiscent of Johann Strauss and his contemporaries.
The concert will take place in Vienna's Musikverein but will be broadcast to over 50 countries worldwide.
Clemens Krauss conducted the first New Year's Day concert in 1939, which consisted entirely of works by Strauss.
The 2008 performance will be led by Georges Pretre, who will be conducting the famous concert for the first time.
Vienna's Musikverein has been part of the capital city since 1870 and is well known for its acoustics.
It main auditorium is the Golden Hall, which houses 1,744 seats and has standing room for 300 people.
