Sands Like Fun
For the many people enjoy beach sports, with the feel of sand beneath their feet, warm water lapping across their toes and the summer sun on their backs, August may just be a great time to head to
Austria.
Landlocked though it is, the country better known for its Alpine Scenery plays host to the Beach Volleyball Grand Slam from August 1st to 5th.
Set not so much at the seaside as the lakeside, Klagenfurt in Karnten, on the shores of the Worther See, is the unlikely venue for a popular event which attracts thousands to enjoy sporting excellence from people who are coincidentally dressed quite skimpily.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels can enjoy the sandy spectacle as well as a range of other attractions.
The Worther See itself has what the local tourist office describes as the "largest inland bathing beach" in Europe, while the city has plenty of historic buildings and is surrounded by spectacular Alpine scenery.
Klagenfurt was in fact a candidate for the 2006 Winter Olympics, which, perhaps unfortunately, does not include beach volleyball.
