Very Modern Vienna
As well as being the home of a host of cheap hotels, Vienna is also a celebrant of all things modern, at least it will be throughout November this year.
The penultimate month of the year sees the Austrian capital host the Wien Modern, a festival of contemporary music that also doffs its hat to modern dance and film.
Since 1988 composers, artists, interpreters and ensembles from all over the world have been invited to Vienna to add their ingredients to the cultural melting pot.
The festival has its base at the Vienna Konzerthaus, a structure built in 1913 to provide a venue for contemporary music. Since 1945 the hall has hosted more than 1,600 world premieres.
Its newest addition is the interestingly titled New Hall, built in 2000, which boasts flexible stages and state-of-the-art technical equipment, making it an ideal location for performances of experimental music.
This year the highlights of the Wien Modern will include portraits of Italian composer Luciano Berio and Austrian musician Georg Friedrich Haas, a retrospective in honour of Dutch filmmaker Frank Scheffer and a turntable festival.
