Areas of Interest in Vienna

Mariahilfer Strasse is the main shopping street offering high street brands.  Alternatively the Naschmarkt is an interesting colourful market.  Although mostly selling fruit and vegetables on Saturdays it expands to include a flea market.

The Leopold Museum and Mumok both display great collections of artwork.  Situated in the Museumsquartier it is the area to explore for visitors interested in culture.

Schloss Schonbrunn gardens first opened to the public in 1779. Tree lined paths lead to classical statues or ruins and the lush fauna is clearly cared for.  There is a coffee house to stop for a rest and a view over the palace and gardens.

From late January to the beginning of March, the Rathausplatz becomes a large ice rink with a connecting path through an adjacent park.  The rink is open until 11pm to make available for a cheap evening activity.

Eating Out in Vienna

Europa is a bit of everything from bar, café and restaurant to club.  Breakfasts though are extremely popular served until 3pm on weekends.  Café Sperl is also a good spot for breakfast or brunch on Gumpendorfer Strasse.

Trzesniewski Café on Dorotheergasse serves a very quick lunch or snack.  Two bite size breads are offered with a choice of 21 spreads.  Hoher Market is the place to visit for Kausekrainer, which is a delicious sausage infused with cheese.  Great beer is also served at the Wurstelstand.  There is no shortage of café's and coffee houses in Vienna.  One of the most authentic to visit is Café Braunerhof, which can be found on Stallburggasse.  For a full lunch meal instead the Hotel Rivera has a creative midday menu offering Italian and Austrian cuisine at affordable prices.

Gasthous Wild offers an excellent wine list amongst its dark wooden interior. The pub restaurant has an excellent atmosphere after being recently revamped.  Classic and modern Viennese dishes are served and a popular example is the excellent schnitzel with potato salad.

Local Information

The city is split by the Danube river with most attractions lying to the west, and the popular tourist area being around the 1st district.

The main tourist office can be found on Albertinaplatz and it opens 9am to 7pm daily.

From the Airport to Vienna

Vienna's airport is around 17 kilometres from the city centre and the quickest way to travel is via the City Airport Train (CAT) which runs every half hour.  This is also the cheapest option as taxi's are also available but for about three times the price.

Bratislava Airport is further away from Vienna, across the boarder in Slovakia.  Buses run into Vienna taking around an hour and a half at a reasonable price.
