Bruges to Hold Pageant of the Golden Tree

Bruges' Pageant of the Golden Tree - which takes place every five years - is to return to the city this summer.

Held over the 25th and 26th of August, the event commemorates the marriage of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy and count of Flanders, with Margaret, princess of York - which is when the Tournament of the Golden Tree was originally held, according to the comitebruge website.

About 2,000 actors take part in the pageant, along with six 'giants' and 12 floats.

For those who stay in a cheap hotel in Bruges, the website states the Pageant of the Golden Tree will also offer a history of Flanders, particularly the role its guilds, corporations and municipal magistracy had in battling ruling sovereigns.

Bruges itself is considered to be the most popular tourist destinations in Belgium. It has a population of approximately 120,000 and its average temperature in July is 23 degrees Centigrade.
