Brussels Sprouts Ancient Festival
Although Brussels may not be every Brit's first choice of holiday, people looking for a break from the norm might want to jump on a plane to Brussels.
The Ommegang Pageant may not be the most self-explanatory name, but holidaymakers who are lucky enough to attend will find a spectacular display of colour and culture.
While originating in the 14th Century as a religious festival, the event has ditched its religious connotations and has been the major event in the city's summer since 1549.
The procession takes place on horse and foot, complete with banners, pennants and crossbowmen in full garb, in what the organisers describe as a "colourful but solemn token to the opulence of the renaissance city".
However, only 3000 tickets are available to witness the festival at the grand palace, so travellers wishing to take in the tradition are advised to book well in advance.
