'Cathedrals of the Sea' Float into Antwerp

Known as 'cathedrals of the sea', more than 100 vessels are expected to dock in Antwerp this August for the Tall Ships' Races.

Staring on August 19th and running until the 22nd, the event will be celebrating its 50th birthday this year.

An international competition, the event will be taking place in the city for the fourth successive year and will give younger visitors a hands-on experience, the Antwerp Tourist Board reveals.

The city will allow 25 visitors between 19 and 25 can gain some training and sailing experience on board the ships, while the older viewers take in the majesty of the boast and enjoy a spectacular fireworks display.

However, those lucky enough to be selected will be on board the Swan Fan Makkum, a 62-metre long brig with 14 sails, which was built on a 19th century model.

This year will also see another event as part of the races, the waterkAnt, which recreates the ambience of 19th century life on the docks and allows tourists to see some authentic sights.
