Flower Power
Brussels is a headquarters for many things – the EU, Nato, Belgium's national government – but from October 1st to the 10th it is flowers that take centre stage in the 5th Brussels Flower show.
The show takes place in The National Basilica, the fifth largest church in the world and the largest Art Deco church in the world.
Over 100 florists will transform the church to create a combination of grand architecture with waterfalls, flowers and tropical plants.
Standing 292 feet high, the Basilica offers wonderful views across the city from the top of the dome.
Access to the church is free with a €2 charge to climb the dome.
Brussels offers many other attractions, with a range of Flemish and French architecture and a cosmopolitan, melting pot atmosphere created by the many cultures and nationalities represented there.
The Grand Place, Mini Europe (a scale reconstruction of all things European) are major attractions to complement the reputation Brussels has for gastronomic splendour, of which the beer and chocolates for which Belgium is famous is just a part.
Being a large, cosmopolitan city Brussels has a wealth of accommodation options with plenty of cheap hotels.
