Freezing, but Fun, in Belgium

Those thrill-seeking, adrenaline-addicted people out there who like jumping off bridges, diving with sharks and taking part in other such extreme activities may want to book themselves a hotel in Belgium in January for the annual new year dive.

On January 5th hundreds of people will meet at Groot Strand, the biggest beach in Ostend, to dive into freezing waters before warming up with some soup and a hot drink.

Taking the plunge into the icy depths isn't mandatory, of course, and many people turn up to enjoy the drinking side of the event and watch the daredevils get cold and wet.

Ostend is situated on the coast, not far from the city of Bruges, in north-east Belgium.

It is well known for its seaside esplanade, pier and sand beaches as well as the St Petrus and St Paulus Church.

Ostend was founded as a city in 1265, at which time the major source of income for its inhabitants was fishing, despite the notoriously dangerous and unstable nature of the North Sea.
