Canada is the world's second largest country, and also has the longest coastline in the world. The coastline of Canada has shorelines on the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic Ocean's and yet only has a population of 32 million living on its land. You can get an idea of how vast this country is when flying across it, you would have to travel through six time zones.

Brief History of Canada

It is believed that native Americans were living in Canada for almost 10,000 years before Europeans first arrived. It was not until the early part of the 16th century that Europeans started to explore Canada. Two of the first major explorers were French and English, Jacques Cartier and John Cabot. The English and the French settled parts of Canada, then in 1759 the two country armies fought a battle on the Plains of Abraham close to the city of Quebec. The French lost this battle and subsequently the lands that they had acquired became British.

It was later in the 19th century that Canada became a country including the provinces of Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia in the year 1867 on July the 1st. A prime Minster was appointed his name was Sir John Macdonald. Later that century in 1870 the North West Territories were added, followed in 1871 by British Columbia and Prince Edward Island in the year 1873.

It was not until 1949 that Newfoundland and Labrador were added and became the 10th province of Canada.

Canada Today

There are many French Canadians today who wish for there own country to be separate from Canada, and in 1980 a referendum was held in Quebec but only 40% of the people voted for a separate state. Fifteen years later in 1995 another vote was held and almost 50% voted in favour of a separate state. It is estimated that about 25% of the country speak French today, many people speak both French and English.

Many of Canada's French speaking population lives in the Quebec province there are still many more French speaking areas within Canada. One of these examples is New Brunswick were there are almost a 40% French speaking population.

The majority of Canadian's actually live in the south of the country were conditions are much milder. In fact almost ninety percent of Canadians live within 100 miles of the border with the USA.

Cities here on the border can still get very cold winters, but they also can have warm summers reaching 30 degrees Celsius.
