Caledonian Calgary

Caledonian Calgary Early September is when the royal family makes the short trip from Balmoral to the Highland Games in Braemar, but right across the Atlantic the same sort of action (albeit without the royals) is on offer in the Canadian city of Calgary.

Calgary Highland Games takes place at Shouldice Park on September 1st and is rooted in the culture and history brought across by Scottish settlers in days of yore.

The traditional Highland atmosphere is revived far from the glens and the lochs as all the traditional sports of hammer throwing and caber tossing take place alongside sheepdog demonstrations and of course plenty of piping, drumming and Rabbie Burns recitals as the traditional sounds of Celtic culture fill the air.

With lots of tartan, highland flings and traditional food, plus, the Calgary United Scottish Games Association have promised, a Scotland v England football match, the day promises to be a great feast for those who enjoy the tradition and culture that lie at the heart of Scottish identity.

Calgary has plenty of accommodation for visitors, including cheap hotels.
