Montreal to Stage Celebration of Cinema

Montreal's World Film Festival is set to take place again this August, representing one of the planet's most important celebrations of the medium.

The event, to which thousands of film-buffs, festival lovers and stars flock each year, will feature the screening of films projected nightly on a giant screen at the Esplanade of the Place des Arts.

Starting on August 24th and running until September 4th 2006, box office classics and previous festival favourites are set to light up the evenings from 20:30 local time.

Organisers state that the goal of the Montreal World Film Festival is to encourage cultural diversity and understanding between nations, foster the cinema of all continents by stimulating the development of quality cinema, promote filmmakers and innovative works, discover and encourage new talents and promote meetings between cinema professionals from around the world.

The city, which has a range of cheap hotels for holidaymakers to stay in, is also described by the tourist board as a "world-class gay destination", with one of the world's most gay-friendly gay areas.
