Montreal's Monstrous Race

Montreal's monstrous race This year will see the 12th Montreal International Dragon Boat Race Festival take place at Parc Jean-Drapeau's Olympic Basin.

Between July 28th and 29th, a host of races in different categories will see competitors fight it out to be the quickest in a dragon boat - a colourfully decorated vessel designed to look distinctly dragon-like.

Over 180 25-person crews take part in the event every year to celebrate the life of the Chinese poet Qu Yuan, who committed suicide in 290 BC after being exiled by a king ruling under the influence of less than scrupulous advisers.

Visitors seeking cheap hotels in Montreal can take part in the festivities by watching the races and checking out the various live entertainment, arts and crafts markets and exhibitions, and children's competitions - as well as sampling some traditional Chinese cuisine.

Other dragon boat festivals take place in a number of destinations across the globe, including Boston, Colorado, Toronto, Melbourne and Hong Kong.
