For those who really want to do something civilised on holiday, Ottowa's chief tourist attraction, the Canadian Museum of Civilisation, is open daily through until April.
Host to a series of exhibitions, the museum gives a deep insight into cultural history not just in Canada but all over the world.
Until the end of February the lost city of Petra, the pink stone setting for many a film (such as Indiana Jones and the last crusade) is featured in a large reconstruction.
Other exhibitions running at present include one on Canada's crafts and glassware and another on the national passion for skating.
There is even one on Canada's politicians.
Outside the museum, Ottowa offers many attractions for visitors staying in its many cheap hotels.
These include the Rideau Canal, which offers winter skating, the National Gallery of Canada and the Royal Canadian Mint.
