Literature comes alive at the Vancouver International Writers and Readers Festival, held on Granville Island from October 17th to the 22nd.
The festival, which started in 1988 and has featured many world famous authors, will take place on Granville Island, a short ferry ride from downtown.
According to the official website, an international cast of authors lined up for this year includes British poet Lemn Sissay.
Events include poetry readings, literary cabaret and showcases of young writers' work, with authors mingling with the public in what organiser Hal Wake describes as an important opportunity to "experience the world though the words of our literary artists, who chart the voyage of our deeper selves".
Vancouver is well equipped to meet the accommodation needs of the 10,000-11,000 anticipated visitors, with plenty of cheap hotels.
As well as the festival, the city and the province of British Columbia offer many attractions, with the Holocaust museum, two botanical gardens and Chinatown among the city attractions.
For the more adventurous, the wild country of British Columbia lies beyond.
