Britain's major airports are set for the busiest festive period ever, as 3.5 million people fly off for winter breaks, according to The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

British tourists are expected to flock to cheap hotels in destinations such as Gran Canaria, while skiers and families on city-breaks to Paris, New York and Amsterdam also flock into UK airports.

Heathrow Airport is set to process 1.2 million passengers over the Christmas and new year period, while fellow London hubs Gatwick and Stansted will face nearly another million between them.

But it is not only at London airports that people will need to pre-book their airport parking and arrive earlier for check-in: Glasgow and Edinburgh will handle 110,000 each, while 270,000 are set to pass through Manchester Airport.

Justin Fleming, Abta's president, said: "This is always a peak time for travel as people make the most of the bank holidays and once again there are a record number travelling."

Saturday December 22nd was estimated as the busiest day overall for travel, while December 30th was also singled out as a likely close second.
