Diabolically Good Fun

Diabolically good fun For those who fancy combining a bit of street partying with some late winter sunshine, Lanzarote may just be the place to go in February (exact date to be confirmed).

The event in question is the Teguise Carnival, held in the capital of the island and centred on the devil-masked Diabletes, costumed characters who run around scaring visitors while wearing their grotesque black masks.

It is a tradition that has deep roots, according to the Diabletes website, combining elements of slave and Moorish culture with that of locals and Castillians, so those terrified of these hideous beasts can at least rest in the knowledge that they will have been in good company down the centuries.

Apart from the carnival, visitors to Lanzarote have plenty to see and do while staying in cheap hotels on the island.

Those staying on the coast can enjoy year-round sun, sand and surf, while inland there is the astonishing volcanic landscape and a fascinating range of flora and fauna.
