Sailors on Spanish Seas
The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (Arc) is, according to the World Cruisers Club, the most popular and exciting way to cross the Atlantic.
While it is necessary to have some sailing skills and a good pair of sea legs to take part in the rally, it is completely free for spectators to watch the adventure set sail from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Every year the occasion brings together 150 yachts from all over the globe, making it the world's largest trans-ocean sailing event.
The hopeful boat owners have their eyes on the destination of Rodney Bay in St Lucia one of the Lesser Antilles' most popular islands and all that separates them from their goal is a passage of 2,700 nautical miles.
In the build-up to the big launch there are lectures, safety demonstrations, briefings and parties.
Any holidaymakers who are lucky enough to be in St Lucia when the first yachts reach their destination will be able to join in the daily events and parties that celebrate the arrival of the sailors.
The Arc has a significant goal to make the Atlantic crossing safer and more enjoyable for the average sailor but people staying in cheap hotels in Gran Canaria around the time of the launch will be able to enjoy the event for its drama and party atmosphere.
