The Black Pyramids

Various theories exist as to the actual origin of the Pyramids. Two theories are still disputed one of these is that the stones are quiet simply left over by farmers who were cultivating land in the area. But others claim that the structures are related to esoteric beliefs. But it was the Norwegian anthropologist Dr Thor Heyerdahl that through his research and investigations led to the theory that the pyramids date back to pre-Hispanic times.

The Piramides de Guimar opened to the public only in 1998 and is quickly becoming a main tourist attraction. The park is now receiving about 150,000 visitors a year and is also holding in its grounds special temporary exhibitions. In 1991 the Archaeology Department of La Laguna University held its first dig. The lands were the pyramids stand had been earmarked by the local council for an expansion development for the town. The archaeology department looked for any astronomical relationship and its finding revealed that the pyramids were indeed aligned to the winter and summer solstices.

Further Excavations carried out in 1997-1998 beneath pyramid 1 by a team of American and Canarian archaeologists, which lead to the discovery of a long cave measuring eight meters in length. The discovery of the cave was cause for great excitement and on closer exception it revealed earthenware fragments stone objects, and decorative beads from a necklace all dating back to pre-Hispanic times.

With the remains being sent for carbon testing in Miami the report finally concluded that the items were dated between 680 and 1020 AD.

After visiting the Pyramids the park also has more exhibition sites worth seeing. Firstly there is the Early Navigation Tent this area is dedicated to the early experimental voyages using crafts built by ancient designs. Architecture played a prominent role also in the concept of the new museum building. Renowned architects Cesar Ruiz-Larrea and Enrique Alvarez were brought into create the atmosphere and presence of the ancient cultures. The series of interlinked courtyards were specially designed to recall how early human dwelling place existed. The finely crafted black basalt stone has been selected to clearly differentiate between the new construction and the pre-existing one.

To complement the natural appearance of the park planted vaults cover a number of the courtyard areas not only being pleasant to the eye but also offering shade as well.
