Wet Stuff

Wet stuff Visitors to the Canary Islands will no doubt be looking forward to a bit of water, although normally that means the warm, blue sea.

August, however, brings something just as wet but a bit less sedantry on Gran Canaria, when the residents of Lomo Magullo in the town of Telde stage an enormous waterfight involving literally thousands of people (date to be confirmed).

This involves two things; one is finding a receptacle or water pistol and soaking as many people as possible, while the other is getting oneself as wet as an octopuses' pullover.

Visitors in cheap hotels can enjoy this long-standing tradition, based, bizarrely as it may sound to some, on the quest to provide water to irrigate the island's fruit trees.

Many will find this day not only a lot of fun, but also a great way to meet people and make new friends.
