Winter Holidays 'to Attract 15m Brits'
The British summer has left such a negative impression on the public that some 15m people are set to embark on autumn and winter holidays for some guaranteed sun, according to a poll by Abbey.
A survey of more than 1,000 people by the financial services company found that a third of British adults are planning a foreign trip over the coming months.
The worries of the credit crunch appear to be less compelling than the desire to enjoy some time in the sun for Brits, with holidaymakers set to spend a collective £8 billion on travelling over the autumn and winter.
Cheap hotels in Lanzarote will be among the popular options, with Abbey finding that 41 per cent of holidaymakers plan to head to hotspots such as the Canary Islands and southern Spain.
Four per cent plan to be more adventurous and visit destinations in the Middle East, with similar proportions heading to Africa and Latin America.
Callum Gibson of Abbey said: "Clearly many Britons are in need of escaping our gloomy weather and heading overseas."
People aged 55 to 64 will comprise 44 per cent of the out-of-season travelling public, according to the survey, and a quarter of this group will spend £1,000 or more.
