Hotels in the Caribbean

The Caribbean is a small group of islands otherwise known as the West Indies, which lie off the Caribbean Sea on the Caribbean Plate. To the North of the island lies Mexico, in Central America and to the south lies Venezuela in South America. There are approximately 7000 islets, islands and reefs, all of which make up this archipelago. Amongst these islands are dependencies, sovereign states and overseas departments.

The name Caribbean originates from the word Carib that was the name of one of the more dominants tribes’ people originally found on the islands, upon discovery by Christopher Columbus. He thought he had landed on another part of the Indies in Asia, and therefore referred to the islands as the West Indies, a term still used to this day and recognised as the term for the International Cricket team from this region. These islands, which include the Greater and Lesser Antilles, are sometimes regarded as being part of North America.

The islands have a hot and tropical climate with mild wet winters and heavy monsoon seasons. The larger islands have a thriving tourist industry and being islands, diving around the reefs and all kinds of other water sports are very popular with holidaymakers. Once a famous region for marauding pirates, there are many shipwrecks around the reefs and these make great diving locations and pirate stories abound.

Many European nations have had and still have colonies amongst the Caribbean, such as Britain, France, Denmark, Holland and Spain.
