Croatia is a central Mediterranean country which has borders with Slovinia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia, Herzegovina and the Adriatic Sea. There are over 1000 islands of Croatia and although not all inhabited each has its own unique attributes and history.
Although there are some Bosnian, Serbian, Italian and Hungarian minorities 90% of Croatia’s 4.5 million population is Croat and of which most are Roman Catholic. The official language is Croatian which is Latin in written script.
The Croatian terrain is diverse offering lakes, deep forests, mountains and rocky coastlines. The Adriatic Sea offers enjoyment through motorboats, speedboats and sailing as well as exploring the unique underwater world. It is particularly well known for being crystal clear and clean.
History, culture and architecture is rich across Croatia. Coastal towns are a mix of Renaissance, Romanesque and Baroque architecture and many medieval monuments are found in these areas. To see exceptional architecture Dubrovnik, Korcula and Trogir are the ideal paces to visit. Croatia has several sites on Unesco’s World Heritage List including The Old Town of Dubrovnik, Trogir, Cathedral of St James in Sibenik and Split with the Palace of Diocletian. Some of the countries oldest historical features include many ancient roman buildings and ruins, Neolithic excavation sites and in Krapina 100,000 year old bones of a Neandertal man can be found.

Zagreb the capital of Croatia is filled with a unique atmosphere and ambience. It combines nineteen-century architecture with shopping, markets, dining and a vibrant café scene. The Archaeological Museum is a must see tourist attraction with its famous Egyption collection including the Zagreb Mummy and the oldest Etruscan inscription in the world. The Croation Museum of Natural Science holds the worlds most extensive collection of Neanderthal remains found at one site and is another very popular tourist attraction. The Medvednica Mountain offers a spectacular panoramic view over Zagreb and surrounding valleys. Sljeme its highest peak held its first World Ski Championship in 2005.
Dubrovnik is the ideal place to visit to discover history and culture. The old town was built in the 13th century and remains almost untouched. It is particularly interesting with large walls surrounding the old town and only two entrances through this.
Split is an old and beautiful town as well as being an ideal location to enjoy many watersports. The Diocletian Palace built with local limestone and extraordinary architecture in the late third century AD is a must see when visiting this area. There are also many museums of great interest in Split.
Istria-Pula is home to the Pula Amphitheater built by Romans in 178 BC. This is still used today for music and film festivals. Other popular tourist attractions in this area include the Temple of Augustus and the Archaeological Museum.
There are 8 national parks and 10 nature parks in Croatia. The Piltvice National Park is definitely one of the most popular. 16 lakes offer beautiful walks and exploring for nature lovers. The lakes are connected by many extraordinary waterfalls and are also on the Unesco register of World Natural Heritage. The Paklenica National Park is perfect for rock climbers and mountain lovers. Caves and caverns of amazing form, stalactite and stalagmites can also be explored. The area of forests, gorges, cliffs and sea can be found half way down the coastline.
Croatia’s main tourist attraction has always been its stunning beaches. There is over 1000 miles (nearly 2000 kilometres) of seaside, and hundreds of islands as well. Although there are many official nudist beaches, it is common to see this across many other beaches. More popular beaches include Rab sandy beaches, and Neretva Delta beaches.
Climate in Croatia
Warm dry summers and mild winters are the result of a Mediterranean climate and due to the number of sunshine hours this is one of the sunniest coastlines in Europe. Inland conditions are typical of Eastern Europe and summer is the wettest season. The eastern areas of Croatia experience the coldest winters although these are also the driest areas.
