Have an Alkaholiday
Visitors who enjoy a bit of historic re-enactment can find plenty of it in Croatia, where the Alka Festival takes place in August every year (date to be confirmed).
Held in the town of Sinj, the festival harks back to the battle which bears the town's name in 1715, when just 700 Croats managed to hold off 60,000 Turks.
The name Alka is derived from the Turkish Halka, which means a metal ring, in this instance a metal stirrup of the type collected by the victorious garrison.
Celebrations centre on a jousting contest where contestants try to get their lance through a suspended Alka while sitting on a fast-moving horse.
The event runs for three days, with free entry on the first two (Friday and Saturday) and tickets for the Sunday costing between £5 and £10, according to Visit Croatia.
Sinj, which lies inland from Split, has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
