Kast Away
With countries all over Europe hosting carnivals in and around lent, some may went to get away somewhere unfamiliar and undiscovered.
Kastav in Croatia is such a place, with a whole carnival season offering a series of parades between St Anthony's Day (January 17th) and Ash Wednesday in March (exact dates of parades yet to be confirmed).
These involve a tradition of locals wearing sailor's uniforms, lamb pelts and horns on their heads while making as much noise as possible by ringing bells loudly.
Apart from the parades, visitors staying in cheap hotels in the area have much to see and do.
Kastav itself is set 377 feet up in a beautiful hilly location 11 kilometres from the city of Rijeka, with plenty of local wineries and attractive mountain and woodland scenery, which can be explored by a local path running through the Luzina forest.
The city of Rijeka and the beautiful Adriatic coast are easily reached from the town.
