Those who love their carnivals may find just what they are looking for in the Croatian port city of Rijeka from January 17th to February 21st.
Held over a month and four days, the Rijeka Carnival is a series of parades that take place in the lead up to the final, international parade with hundreds of floats.
Masked parades have been held since 1982, although these are deeply rooted in traditions concerned with warding off evil spirits.
There is also a carnival queen contest, parties and other events surrounding the festival.
Apart from the festival, Rijeka has much to offer visitors staying in its cheap hotels.
It enjoys an enviable location on the Mediterranean coast, with fine architecture and plenty of historic sights, such as the Roman Arch, the City Tower and many old churches.
Rijeka also makes an excellent base to explore Croatia from, with good transport connections to the rest of the country.
