Bronzed Atonis
Those who fancy going somewhere a bit warmer to watch their horse racing this winter may find just what they are looking for in Cyprus, when the Atonis Petris Cup, one of the key events on their race calendar, takes place in January (date to be confirmed).
Held at the Nicosia Race club, the event has been running since the end of the 19th century when the sport of kings was revived on the island.
The Race club is the only place in the whole country where people bet on the horses.
Aside from the horses, Nicosia, known in Greek as Lefkosia, offers a wide variety of attractions for visitors.
Dating from 5,000 BC, this historic city offers delights such as the Byzantine museum, the Cyprus Museum, the Ayios Ioannis Cathedral and the Famagusta Gate.
The city offers a wide range of accommodation, including cheap hotels, as well as making a good base to explore the flora, fauna and history of the island.
