Marathon on Horseback
Racing lovers heading to Cyprus may want to keep an eye open for the Marathon Cup, one of the biggest horse races in the country, held in March (date to be confirmed) for horses aged four and over and worth £18,500 in prize money.
The race takes place at the Nicosia Racing Club, based in the suburb of Ayios Dometios, the only organisation in the entire country authorised to hold races and stage betting on horses.
Every race meeting consists of ten races, giving punters plenty to watch and try their luck on if they fancy taking up a hot tip.
Outside the racecourse, Nicosia has plenty to offer visitors staying in cheap hotels.
History buffs can see the historic walled centre, while there is a wealth of palaces, Byzantine relics, churches and monasteries.
Although the city is divided between its Turkish and Greek Cypriot parts by the so-called Green Line, the whole of it is accessible to visitors.
Beyond the city, Cyprus offers excellent beaches and scenery to go with its warm climate.
