Saint Applause
Cyprus is an island steeped in tradition and festivals with the differing Greek and Turkish people always keen to emphasise their cultures, all of which may make Archangel Michael Day well worth seeing.
Held in November (date to be confirmed), the festival takes place at the Archangel Michael Monastery in Lefkosia (Nicosia).
True to form for a saint's festival, the occasion is accompanied by two days of feasting and drinking, with the bonus of a chance to see the 1785 fresco of the saint.
Saint Michael's festival is just one of many attractions on this historic island, with plenty of cultural events and history, from old churches to the ruins of different civilisations, from the Byzantine to the Neolithic.
It also offers regular sunshine to thaw out the winter chills.
Nicosia offers plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
