Take Sanctuary
Many people considering a trip to Cyprus could be thinking about beaches, watersports, sunshine, historic churches and monuments, but don't forget the donkeys.
The place in question is the village of Vouni, inland from Limassol and close to the highest mountains on the island, while the event is the Vouni Village Festival.
Celebrating the culture and heritage of the village, the festival is known as a palouze festival, named after the non-alcoholic grape juice drink that is a local speciality.
What is special about Vouni for animal lovers, however, is the presence of a donkey sanctuary, where these gentle beasts of burden are just waiting to be pampered by friendly visitors.
The sanctuary is privately run by Friends of the Cyprus Donkey and the owners advertise the fact that people can adopt a donkey to keep it in comfort and carrots for life.
Vouni has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
