Wet Stuff

Wet Stuff As an island in the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus has always had a close relationship with the sea, but things get really wet in the Kataklysmos festival on May 27th.

The event is essentially a religious festival, held on the feast day of Pentecost (in the Greek Orthodox calendar) but consisting of a watery theme connected both to Noah's flood and the Greek story of Deukalion, with not a trace of solemnity as splashing about in the water becomes the main theme.

It begins with a ceremony in which a priest throws a crucifix into the sea, which swimmers dive into to recover, followed by a day of swimming races, boat races and general messing around in the water.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels on the coast in Cypus can naturally join in, with the warm blue sea and sandy beaches offering a fine trip at any time.
